Rally Portugal witnessed an intense battle between Hyundai driver Ott Tanak and Toyota’s Sebastien Ogier. Tanak initially led the rally from SS2, fending off Ogier’s challenges until a mechanical issue disrupted his dominance. Despite setbacks, Tanak’s inspired i20 N Rally 1 setup helped him maintain a lead, only to face power steering problems midway through Stage 17.
This mishap allowed Ogier to overtake his Toyota teammate Kalle Rovanpera and seize the lead. Rovanpera, in turn, engaged in a fierce contest with Takamoto Katsuta for the final podium spot. Rovanpera’s strategic tire choice paid off, enabling him to secure third place despite initial difficulties.
Meanwhile, Sami Pajari enjoyed a trouble-free run and finished sixth, while Josh McErlean clinched victory in the M-Sport-Fords battle, securing eighth place. The WRC2’s Oliver Solberg rounded up the top 10, displaying impressive driving skills throughout the rally.
As the Rally Portugal concluded after six challenging stages, the competition remained fierce, with drivers gearing up for the final day’s showdown. Tanak’s setback and Ogier’s subsequent lead change set the stage for an exciting conclusion to this gripping WRC event.
