Chris Gabehart recently responded to the lawsuit filed against him by his former employer, Joe Gibbs Racing. In his legal filing, Gabehart expressed that the lawsuit was not about protecting trade secrets, but rather an attempt to punish him for leaving. He also shed light on his reasons for departing from Joe Gibbs Racing, citing a culture of dysfunction with driver Ty Gibbs at the center of the tension.
The lawsuit, seeking damages of over $8 million, alleges that Gabehart engaged in a scheme to steal sensitive data from JGR and bring it to his new position at Spire Motorsports. Despite the legal battle, Gabehart has explained that he felt misled and undermined within the organization due to his role not aligning with what was initially promised to him.
Gabehart’s departure from Joe Gibbs Racing came after disagreements with Coach Gibbs over managing the No. 54 car and the organizational structure. He expressed that decisions regarding the car were made without his input, and that there were discrepancies in how driver Ty Gibbs was treated compared to other teammates.
After discussions with Coach Gibbs, Gabehart and the organization agreed that they should part ways. However, since then, Joe Gibbs Racing has sued Gabehart, claiming damages and the violation of nondisclosure agreements. Despite Gabehart’s willingness to subject himself and Spire Motorsports to forensic audits to show no misuse of proprietary data, JGR proceeded with legal action.
Gabehart maintains that he did not share any confidential information with Spire and that allowing injunctive relief would harm his career in the NASCAR industry. The lawsuit continues to unfold, with both parties presenting their sides in court hearings.
