Fernando Alonso is facing a challenging situation mentally due to Aston Martin’s troubled start in the 2026 Formula 1 season. As the least competitive team in F1 currently, Aston Martin is struggling with various issues in its AMR26 car. Among these problems is the 25-lap restriction in the Melbourne season opener caused by excessive vibrations from the new Honda power unit. These vibrations lead to battery failures, with the team running out of spares in Australia.
The team’s challenges extend beyond the engine, as Aston Martin began its wind tunnel program four months behind schedule. This delay has resulted in limited running time and a significant performance gap compared to other teams. With these setbacks, Alonso’s ambition of winning a third F1 title seems unlikely, especially as he is approaching 45 years old and his contract expires this season.
Adrian Newey, Aston Martin’s team principal, acknowledges Alonso’s exceptional talent and character, emphasizing the difficulties of the current season as a rebuilding year for the team. While Alonso faced engine troubles with Honda during his second stint at McLaren, he remains optimistic about Honda’s ability to resolve issues based on its success with Red Bull and Verstappen. Alonso’s focus is on gradual improvements throughout the season and how they will impact his decisions for the future.
