Prabowo Subianto, the current President of Indonesia and successor to President Joko Widodo, delivered a powerful criticism of neoliberal economic theory during his speech at the 27th anniversary of the National Awakening Party (PKB). He argued against the long-standing belief that wealth accumulation at the top will eventually benefit the wider population, labeling it a myth that has yet to materialize. Prabowo emphasized the importance of Article 33 of the Constitution, which outlines the state’s role in ensuring the well-being and prosperity of its people, free from poverty and hunger. He highlighted the need for a people-centered economy based on mutual cooperation and familial solidarity, in contrast to corporate conglomeration promoted by neoliberalism.
Prabowo expressed his belief that democracy is essential, but meaningless if citizens continue to face basic hardships such as inadequate housing, hunger, and unemployment. He emphasized the economic spirit of the Constitution, particularly Article 33, which advocates for collective economic structures founded on the principle of kinship. This stands in opposition to neoliberalism, which justifies inequality with the promise of trickle-down wealth distribution. Prabowo dismissed this theory, pointing out that after 200 years, the promised trickle-down effect has yet to materialize.
The President’s remarks underscore his commitment to an inclusive economy that prioritizes the well-being of all citizens, not just the elite. By rejecting models that perpetuate inequality and advocating for policies that benefit the broader population, Prabowo reaffirmed his dedication to a people-centered economic approach.
