President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship programs, namely Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG), People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat), and the Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih / Kopdes), are gaining recognition as effective tools in accelerating poverty eradication. These initiatives are not just aimed at alleviating poverty through social assistance, but rather at empowering individuals and promoting economic self-reliance. Head of the Poverty Eradication Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin) Budiman Sudjatmiko likened the government’s approach to a football game, where the goal is to equip the players (the poor) with skills, knowledge, proper nutrition, and economic opportunities, moving towards the ultimate goal of eradicating poverty.

The Sekolah Rakyat program, which is based on boarding schools, is designed to break the cycle of poverty, while MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih provide economic benefits to entire communities. These programs are expected to create millions of job opportunities, benefiting not only the direct participants but also upstream sectors such as farmers, SMEs, and village-owned enterprises (BUMDes). Deputy Head of BP Taskin, Nanik S. Deyang, emphasized the tangible hope for independence that these programs offer to poor households, highlighting the transformational impact on local producers and businesses.

One example cited was a small tofu-and-tempeh factory that saw a significant increase in employment after supplying MBG kitchens. Kopdes Merah Putih plays a crucial role in streamlining supply chains and reducing costs by eliminating middlemen. Through Kopdes, individuals can access affordable credit and essential resources like fertilizer at lower prices, without the need for intermediaries. This cooperative model not only enhances economic opportunities but also protects individuals from exploitative practices by providing fairer access to capital compared to traditional banking systems.
